Lessons From A Vegetable Stand
My grandfather had a vegetable farm. When I was old enough to carry a shovel, I helped him out in the fields, planting and harvesting. Then we’d haul our fresh produce to the nearby farmer’s market.
We weren’t the only produce farmer there. But we had a loyal customer base. Customers who came to us every week – even placing orders for the next week. This surprised me.

At first, I couldn’t understand why people came to my grandfather instead of the other farmers. Their produce was as fresh as ours. Their prices were like ours. But our little stand stayed busy all day long, while others got a slow trickle.
Then it hit me. They didn’t have grandfather.
Grandfather had the “gift of gab,” as my aunt would say. People returned to his stand every week to share stories, talk about the produce, and talk about their lives.
He built relationships with them. Not the kind based on fake small talk. He took a genuine interest in them. To him, they weren’t just customers… they were his friends.
I kept that lesson in mind when I started my own general contracting business. When we work together, you quickly learn that you’re more than a project – you’re someone I care for—someone I want to keep happy.
